Who Won?
o As Nigerians returned back to work today, I kept thinking over and over who was the true victor between the Government and the Nigerian people after the 6-day national strike action.
During discussions with friends and people, I maintained a view that the price would most likely fall in the middle between 65naira and the newly increased price of 141naira. Labour would claim that as a victory albeit a partial one, and the Government would also claim it as a sort of victory of not returning to the old price of 65naira.
I really do hope that the blood of those who died during the strike has not been shed in vain. Return to 65naira would have been the real victory in the fight against corruption and all the wastage and inefficiencies of Government. Return to 65naira would have truly demonstrated that power is truly in the hands of the people.
Now, I really do fear that its simply a return to "business as usual". I fear Nigerians might forget the fight and return to "suffering and smiling". Its a cycle I have seen over and over and over again. It’s the same cycle my father and grandfather witnessed. I pray and am eager to ensure that my children do not witness the same cycle. God give me the grace and strength!
Only time will tell what the future holds for Nigeria. We keep watching and hopefully continue fighting for justice, peace, equality and liberty. God bless Nigeria.
